Smoke Detectors

Portman Electric residential electrical services prepares your family for any hazardous situation with our smoke detector installation services in Cleveland OH

Do you have the right amount of smoke detectors in your home and are they installed properly? The placement of smoke detectors is very important. Sleeping areas need the most protection. A smoke detector should be installed in every room that will be occupied.

Be sure to keep the detector away from fireplaces and wood stoves to avoid false alarms. Place smoke detectors at the top of each stairwell and at the end of each long hallway. Smoke rises easily through stairwells. If you should put a smoke detector in your kitchen, be sure to keep it away from cooking fumes or smoking areas.

Proper mounting of a smoke detector is also important. You can mount many detectors yourself, but those connected to your household wiring should have their own separate circuit and be installed by a professional electrician. If you mount your detector on the ceiling, be sure to keep it at least 18 inches away from dead air space near corners. If you mount it on the wall, place it 4 to 12 inches below the ceiling and away from corners.  Keep them high because smoke rises. Never place them any closer than 3 feet from an air register that might recirculate smoke. Do not place them near doorways or windows where drafts could impair the detector operation. Do not place them on an un-insulated exterior wall or ceiling because temperature extremes can affect the batteries.

"Jeff, I just wanted to let you know how happy I am with the electrician you sent - Tim. He was definitely the right guy for this job on my RV. I guess it helped that he is also an RV enthusiast, be he wouldn't deviate from the plane even against all odds and 90 degree plus heat. I was ready to have him run a new line but he knew how improbable it was that the line itself was bad and knew there had to be a bad link somewhere. I told him I'd kiss him if he found it, but I only shook his hand instead. In addition to being very knowledgeable, he was a damn nice guy. Thanks again for Tim and thanks for sending him in such a timely manner. Your company shines above the rest of the crowd."
